Well Done 5th Bridge Volunteers!

Congratulations to all of you for making a difference in the city of Northfield this weekend. Under your leadership, fueled by the volunteerism of over 800 adults, children and students, we collectively packed over 200,000 meals in a three day span. The number is more precisely logged at 205,000. That is double our original goal of 100,000 meals.

It is difficult to know how to thank so many of you for your creativity, planning aptitude, sweat equity, engagement of volunteers, positive attitudes, behind the scenes hard work and financial support. It is a sheer honor and blessing to be a citizen with you in the community of Northfield. Read more »

Our first unit in 7th grade Science was Ecology. Students learned about how living things interact with each other and their environment, including the effects of invasive species. As part of our unit, students participated in a community project, The Buckthorn Menace. The goal of this project was to remove buckthorn at Carleton and St. Olaf and to raise public awareness of environmental damage caused by invasive species.

Imagine growing up and wanting to have your own apartment, a job and friends. Now imagine trying to do that with a developmental disability that sometimes is the first thing people see about you.

Jimmy Stewart Is My Neighbor by Felica Peters

My favorite scene in It’s A Wonderful Life is the moment where Jimmy Stewart runs pell mell down Main Street, his jacket open, his face cut and bleeding, his feet undoubtedly wet from the slush and the snow, and his voice harsh from the cold as he cries out to each and every passerby, and they back to him. He is giddy with joy, overwhelmed by the heart pounding realization that most of the time, good is good enough. The world, with all its raw imperfections, is ok because he’s in it and he, with all his flaws, is good enough for it. Read more »

Men like to build stuff; fix things; repair broken down parts. And when you bring a group of men together who have a desire to improve our community, the possibilities for them to effect positive change in our community are endless. A newly-formed Circle of Service spent the morning of July 28th on the 700 block of Prairie Street installing a new deck for residents of a Laura Baker house. The carpenters extraodinaire (from left to right) included Rod Christensen, Judd Lohmann, Pete Schuster, Chris Huber, Dave Nitz , Tim Hanson, Rich Lorang and John Daniels.
