Dear Friends,

After this past week, Northfield should be known as the community of Cows, Colleges, Contentment and Caring people. Northfielders have a long history of generously caring for the community and its people, and last week we extended that care to others in need around the world.

The week began with a record number of participants in our local CROP Hunger Walk. The walk raises money and awareness of world poverty to help fight the root causes of hunger and create sustainability. Donations are still coming in, and the local group is anticipating that they will raise approximately $37,000 (25% of the funds raised will benefit the local Community Action Center and 75% of the monies will go towards world hunger relief).

5th Bridge’s Feed My Starving Children mobile food-packing event was also a fabulous success. In total, 171,072 nutritious, life-saving meals were packed by 705 Northfield volunteers, and over $26,000 was donated by individuals and businesses to cover the cost of the food we packed. Simply put, 468 starving children around the world will be fed for the next year because of the care and generosity of Northfield residents. Here are a few highlights…

  • Northfield High School student Sam Estenson organized a successful fundraiser at the high school that collected nearly $500 for 5th Bridge’s Feed My Starving Children service project. With a $1 donation, students had the chance to dip their hands in maroon or gold paint (metallic gold if they were willing to give $5) and place their handprints on the walls in the lower cafeteria.
  • Service Learning students at the high school also collected nearly $100 in donations at their display which compared and contrasted poverty in third world countries with the abundance in our community.
  • St. Dominic 7th grade students raised an astounding $890 for Feed My Starving Children.
  • Volunteer Ginger Church had so much fun packing with her coworkers on Thursday that she came back to pack again on Saturday.
  • Coral Ann Cowan must have really enjoyed volunteering at the event, because she chose to stay through two packing sessions on Friday and came back to volunteer all day on Saturday as well.
  • Justin and Kristin Stets put together a “Day One” video to the tune of “Where is the Love” it can be seen by visiting www.5thbridge.org.

On behalf of 5th Bridge and Feed My Starving Children, we would like to express our sincere thanks to the hundreds of people who contributed their time, money and goods to make this event a resounding success.

We are so blessed to live in a community of caring people. Together, we extended that circle of care and made the world a little better.

In gratitude,

Candy Taylor and your friends at 5th Bridge
