www.vintagebandfestival.org this event was held for the first time in 2006 with 15 bands from around the world and the USA. This is a major production and requires many people in a large variety of jobs to pull off. This year we have 25 bands doing 100 concerts in four days. Bands from Austria, Russia, and many from the USA, playing authentic vintage period instruments. Some the players themselves have made. In the 2006 event you may recall there was an impromptu “battle of the bands” between a Confederate band from North Carolina and the First Brigade Band from Watertown, WI. This battle was a reenactment of the bands battling in the American Civil War. One band on one side of the field or river or gully, and the opposing band on the other. We are looking for volunteers to help at the concert locations during the weekend setting up chairs, helping the bands, we are going to have 100 concerts at many locations and we will need people to be at each one. You can call or email me if you have any questions, and please visit the web site and you can get a better picture of the event. Thank you for your consideration. John Hiscox volunteer coordinator. 612-756-2188

Common Good RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is excited to announce that we will be starting a FREE exercise class in Northfield. Bone Builders is a weight bearing exercise program that has proven to help build bone density and aid in the prevention of osteoporosis. We offer the classes for free and provide free weights for all participants as well. UCare has helped sponsor these classes. Bone Builders will be offered in Northfield 2 times a week year round. The program has been active for a year in Faribault and the participants are reporting great results.

We are looking for several more community members who are interested in receiving free training to lead these exercise classes. If you are an active, health conscious individual who enjoys working with others, this may be a great fit for you and an opportunity to make a difference in your community.
Please call RSVP coordinator Deb Johnson-Schad @649-1699 for more information.

Local student Sarah Tiano, needs your help to make bracelets to raise money for War Kids Relief. Here is more from Sarah.
“In December, I applied and won a grant through the Healthy Community Initiative. The money allowed me to buy supplies to construct bracelets. To raise money to support children in war torn countries, I work with local youth making bracelets and educating them about the situation of kids in the Middle East. My project specifically focuses on Afghanistan and people living in internally displaced refugee camps. The conditions in these camps are absolutely atrocious, no food, water or medical care. The thing that hurts the most to see though is that there is no joy. These people are people and they deserve to have happiness and the same comforts we take for granted in our own daily lives. I am matched up with one Afghani mother/father (I am not sure which one yet) and am going to be helping them start there own business in the camp. That way, they are able to become self sufficient and earn money to help their kids. They will then be able to teach other people and the project will continue to grow. That is what is so great about this- we aren’t just sending money somewhere, we are giving people the resources and opportunities to better their own lives and the lives of their children.

I have worked with youth at St. Peter’s and now at church and also will start work with the Middle School Youth Center on March 1. I would absolutely love to get something going and work with Fifth Bridge. I think this would be an amazing opportunity to expand this project and get the word out to even more people. If you want to learn more about War Kids Relief, the non profit I am collaborating with, visit warkidsrelief.org

Also, here is the article from the Northfield News. It might be helpful for a little bit more knowledge.”

Come join the CRWP’s efforts to help improve the health and aesthetic appeal of the Cannon and Straight Rivers. With the success of our 1st Annual River Cleanup in September 2009, 215 volunteers at ten sites throughout the watershed pulled over 25,000 pounds of garbage, debris and tires out of the watershed. Because of the turnout and the stories shared from group participants, it is clear that people are passionate about the rivers and lakes in our watershed and want to make a difference by taking action in their own back yards. This year we are adding 5 more sites and adding twice the number of volunteers. Mark your calendars, this rewarding and fun volunteer experience will take place on September 18th, 2010 from 9am to noon.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE and HAVE FUN!
