I have a set of instructions for pet owners that I need translated from English to Spanish. It is just one page but is pretty comprehensive.

We also may need volunteers to assist us in spreading the word in a couple specific apartment home and mobile home parks. I will post more about that when we have an exact date for the clinic. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in helping.

Please let me know if you can translate this document, and I will send it your way.

Northfield’s low-income students have trailed their peers in average reading and math proficiency by more than 25% over the last 5 years. And this group is growing: almost 1/3 of Northfield’s elementary students now receive free or reduced-price lunches– a 50% increase since 2004.

We need YOU to help close this gap and prepare all Northfield students for success. Research shows that mastering reading by 3rd grade is key to lifelong success.

Northfield elementary schools are starting a new volunteer program to close the achievement gap and we need YOU. Help all our kids launch for a life as learning superheroes!

3 ways you can help:

Northfield elementary schools are expanding three types of volunteer support:
1. intensive one-on-one tutoring – 30 minutes 3-5 times per week
2. read aloud – listen to kids read – 30-60 minutes 1-3 times per week
3. enrichment challenge – help students who need an extra challenge so teachers can focus on those in the gap – 60 minutes per week for at least four weeks
We also need adults to serve as mentors to youth and for periodic help with testing and assessment.

Yes, I want to help! (click here to sign up)

Carleton College Arboretum Prairie Seed Collecting: We have an ambitious prairie planting being installed this fall and need extra help with seed collecting. We will be hosting twice weekly early evening seed collecting expeditions August through October, and some Saturday mornings. Described by one volunteer as a “treasure hunt,” this is a fun activity that is suitable for all ages and physical abilities. Seed collecting is a fun and relaxing activity, and is a great way to learn your prairie plants! Groups (scouts, service clubs, etc) can easily be accommodated, but please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

We are looking for people of all skill levels. We love people who know what they’re doing on a job site – but we also love people who are eager to learn.

We also like to feed our volunteers. Think about providing a meal to our volunteers on one of our work days.

We hoping to have work days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some days we will start in the morning and be done in the afternoon; other days we’ll start late afternoon and work into the evening. Please check our web site, www.habitatricecounty.org for details.

Thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, Minnesota ranks in the top five U.S. states in as having the cleanest highways and most effective highway clean-up programs. As you drive around, notice all the groups who have taken responsibility for cleaning a stretch of the highway through the Adopt a Highway Program.

The roots of the Adopt-a-Highway program date back to 1984, when James Evans, an engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation, noticed litter blowing out of the back of a pickup truck he was driving behind in Tyler, Texas. Concerned about the growing cost to the government of keeping roadways clean, Evans soon began asking community groups to volunteer to pick up trash along sections of local highways they could “adopt.” Though Evans got no takers for his idea, Billy Black, the public information officer for the Tyler District of the Texas Department of Transportation, took up the cause and organized the first official Adopt-a-Highway program, which included training and equipment for volunteers. The first group to participate in the program was the Tyler Civilian Club, and on March 9, 1985, a sign was erected to indicate that the group had adopted a two-mile stretch along Texas’s Highway 69. Similar signs began popping up in the area as other groups volunteered to beautify their own stretches of highway. The program eventually spread to thousands of towns and cities across the U.S. and to such countries as Canada, Japan and New Zealand.

Area churches, 4H groups, St. Olaf and Carleton groups, families, employee groups, and even Green Bay Packer Fans (which is gutsy in Viking territory, but their service is still appreciated) have adopted sections of highway in and around Northfield. These groups made a commitment to picking up litter along both sides of their two mile stretch of highway, at least two or three times each year, and they made a two year commitment.

The Adopt a Highway Program supports their efforts by erecting a recognition sign, providing safety vests, garbage bags, and training materials, and by picking up the trash that was collected by the volunteers. If your group is

If your group is looking for a fun outdoor volunteer opportunity, but you’re not sure if you want to make a two year commitment to one activity, 5th Bridge can help. We have adopted three sections of local highway on the North end of town on behalf of Northfield Volunteers. We have all the supplies as well. This flexible volunteer opportunity is available Spring, Summer, or Fall and can be done any day of the week, anytime of the day, you can make a one time commitment or do it every year. At this time we still have group volunteer openings for two highway sections in the spring, two in the summer and all three sections are available for the fall. If interested, contact Candy Taylor at 507-581-3017 or email candy@5thbridge.org

Together, we will keep the greater Northfield area beautiful.
